Welcome to Session 2!

Week 0 was a big week in food science, with the 41st Annual AIFST Convention being held in Sydney. This year, UNSW was well represented, with student presenting for the Malcolm Bird award and in the student product development competition.

Congratulations to Hugh Dircks who was awarded the Malcolm Bird award for the presentation of his PhD work on cocoa fermentation. Also congratulations to finalist Jeremy Chenu who presented his work on bacteriophages in food ecosystems.

In the student product development competition, Team Awesome, consisting of Tamara Cameron, Yvonne Lake and Rebecca Paget, presented their work on highly creative Choc Banana Ravioli. The group gave an excellent presentation and their poster was very eye catching, however the world was not yet ready for the wonders of dessert ravioli and the group was trumped by the team from Deakin University.

Congratulations to all the finalists and hopefully UNSW will continue with their success next year with more up and coming student presentations.

On a more social note, coming up this session are a number of exciting events:

The UNSW Student Societies Engineering Soccer and BBQ extravaganza!

The event is a combined effort put on by the student societies representing Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical sciences (CHSE social - that's us!) and Mining Engineering - The Intra-Engineering Sports Committee. The event is sponsored very proudly by Connell Wagner and Parsons Brinckerhoff. These two companies are giants in the engineering consulting industry. They are interested in attracting the best graduates at the best Australian Engineering University (UNSW - in my eyes) from all the engineering faculties. Hence, they are aiding in the finance of this enormous event and will have industry representatives present ready to answer any questions you may have.

The idea of the event is that each school will put together an elite soccer team and play off the other Schools in a bid to become the UNSW Engineering Soccer Champions. We will be running a BBQ that will be running for the duration of the event. The aim of the event is to encourage intra-engineering socialisation so come along, support your school and have one on us.

What: UNSW Engineering Soccer and BBQ extravaganza

When: Thursday 15th May 13:00 - 17:00 - Week 9

Where: The surrounding areas of the Village Green

Who: All UNSW engineering students are invited to attend.

Cost: Free! Did I say free? I did! FREE!
